How to Fix Composite Fencing To Wooden Fence Posts Using NeoTimber® Aluminium Post Inserts
Breathe new life into your timber fencing with NeoTimber's aluminium post inserts and fix composite fencing to timber fence posts. NeoTimber’s aluminium post inserts for timber work in a similar manner to the concrete insert options and allow you to retrofit your NeoTimber® composite fencing onto either existing or new timber posts. Our aluminium inserts are provided in 1800mm lengths but can be cut down to length using suitable equipment.
Inserts must be fixed to the timber posts in four places along their length. We recommend using 4mm x 40mm self-tapping screws to securely fix the insert to the timber posts. Should you wish to retrofit this solution to existing timber posts using NeoTimber® composite fencing, it is important to check the dimensions of our timber post inserts, fence boards, decorative screens and capping rails prior to installation to ensure all are compatible.
How To Install NeoTimber® Composite Fencing Onto Existing Timber Posts
We have designed our composite fencing so it can be retrofitted onto pre-existing timber posts, providing you with greater customisation options for your outdoor projects. To fix your fencing panels to timber posts, you will first need to position and drill our wooden fence post inserts in place, before securing the base of the panel with the bottom capping rail. Once this has been completed, you can simply stack your tongue-and-groove fencing boards on top of one another to make the finished panel, just as you would with our composite posts. Cap each panel off using the top capping rail. Our individual fencing boards can be cut down to size just like real timber, ensuring they fit exactly between the spacings of your existing timber posts.
We aim to create a fencing system that is uncomplicated and easy to construct. However, we acknowledge that some people may need more of a visual guide. With this in mind, we have created the installation video above to clearly demonstrate the process. Should you need any more information surrounding installing composite fencing onto timber posts, we recommend reading through our comprehensive installation guide.
Position The Insert Against The Timber Post
Begin by placing the aluminium insert flush against the timber post. If the timber post is shorter or requires adjustment, carefully cut the insert to the desired length. Once positioned correctly, pre-drill holes along the length of the insert to ensure a secure fit. Finally, fasten the insert to the timber post using screws at four evenly spaced points, ensuring stability and a strong foundation for your composite fencing panels.

Secure Using The Bottom Capping Rail & L-Bracket
Before you begin attaching your NeoTimber® composite fence slats, start by fitting the bottom fence board capping rail. This foundational piece provides stability and ensures that all subsequent slats align correctly. Make sure the rail is level and securely fixed to your posts, as it forms the base for the entire fencing panel.
Once the bottom rail is in place, you can continue building up your fence panels, stacking each slat neatly and securely. For a detailed step-by-step guide on assembling your fencing panels after the base is installed, click here for more information.
