Quick answers to common decking questions.
How is NeoTimber® decking installed?
NeoTimber® decking is installed using concealed fixing methods to achieve a clean finish with no visible screws. Boards are installed on existing wooden or NeoTimber® composite subframes. Correct joist spacing, ventilation, and support centres must be followed to ensure long-term performance. Installations can be completed by competent DIY installers or by NeoTimber® approved professionals on more complex projects. Further detail is covered in, what is composite decking made of?
What is the best decking type for a garden?
For many gardens, NeoTimber® composite decking is the go-to choice. It offers a real-wood look, with slip, fade and rot resistance without the maintenance, making it ideal for almost any outdoor area and family space. Aluminium decking can suit modern designs where drainage, lighter weight, or fire resistance matters, especially on raised platforms. If you are unsure about which tones, textures, and profiles to choose, simply compare our composite decking range before choosing your decking.
What are the benefits of composite decking?
Composite decking combines the look of real wood with improved durability and reduced upkeep. It does not rot, warp, or splinter, making it comfortable underfoot and safer for everyday use. Composite boards resist moisture and staining, require no painting or sealing, and retain their appearance for longer than traditional timber. This makes composite decking ideal for gardens and outdoor living spaces where consistent performance and low maintenance are priorities.
Why would I choose aluminium decking over composite decking?
Aluminium decking is often chosen when weight and compliance are key priorities. It is lightweight, fire rated, and highly stable, making it suitable for balconies, roof terraces, and commercial settings. NeoTimber® aluminium decking is available in finishes that deliver a real wood look, combining architectural style with visual warmth. Its low maintenance requirements and resistance to moisture make aluminium a strong option where long-term durability and safety are essential.
Which NeoTimber® decking ranges can be used for commercial applications?
All NeoTimber® decking ranges are suitable for commercial applications when specified and installed correctly, with the exception of Classic Lite decking. Both composite and aluminium decking can be used in high-traffic environments, with solid core composite boards offering enhanced durability where additional strength is required. Aluminium decking is also widely specified for commercial projects due to its fire rating and lightness. Review our product specifications and installation guidance to ensure suitability for the intended use.
Can NeoTimber® be used on high-rise balconies and roof terraces?
Yes, NeoTimber® aluminium decking is suitable for high-rise balconies and roof terraces. It is lightweight, fire rated, and dimensionally stable, making it appropriate for elevated environments where compliance and safety are critical. Aluminium decking is commonly specified for these applications due to its fire rating compliance and long-term durability. Composite decking may be suitable in certain applications, but aluminium is typically recommended where fire regulations apply.
What warranty is included with NeoTimber® decking?
NeoTimber® decking is supplied with clear warranty cover across the range. All NeoTimber® decking products include a 10-year commercial and a 25-year residential warranty as standard. The only exception is Lite composite decking, which includes a 10-year residential warranty. Warranty cover applies when products are installed and used in line with published guidance. Full warranty terms are available to review before specification or installation.
Does composite and aluminium decking require much maintenance?
Composite and aluminium decking are extremely low-maintenance materials. Neither requires painting, staining, sealing, or seasonal treatments. Occasional cleaning with water and a mild detergent is usually enough. Composite boards resist rot, splintering, and moisture-related wear. Aluminium boards remain dimensionally stable and corrosion resistant. Compared with timber decking, both options remove most routine upkeep, saving time and cost while keeping outdoor spaces looking consistent year after year. No specialist products are required, and a simple wash every so often maintains appearance.
Can I install composite and aluminium decking myself or do I need a professional?
Both options are possible. Confident DIY installers can fit NeoTimber® decking by following the relevant installation guides and using the correct fixing systems. However, professional installation is recommended for complex layouts, raised structures, balconies, or commercial projects. NeoTimber® approved installers have experience with our systems and can help ensure correct installation, long-term performance, and compliance where required.
Can I install NeoTimber® decking on an existing subframe?
Yes, NeoTimber® decking can be installed on an existing subframe, provided it is structurally sound and suitable for decking use. Timber and composite subframes can both be used if correct joist spacing, support centres, and fixing guidance are met. However, older subframes may be prone to movement or rot over time. For long-term durability and resistance to rot, a NeoTimber® composite subframe is recommended, as it is designed specifically to support NeoTimber® decking systems.
Is composite and aluminium decking fire rated?
Fire rating differs between materials. NeoTimber® aluminium decking is fire rated to A2fl-s1, tested in accordance with EN 13501-1, making it suitable for applications where fire compliance is required, including balconies and commercial spaces. Composite decking does not carry the same fire classification and should be assessed carefully for its intended use. Always check product specifications and relevant building regulations before specifying decking in fire-sensitive environments.
