Deluxe Antique Garden Decking: An Inspirational Composite Decking Solution For A Shady Garden

Project Background

In an exclusive neighbourhood, within a short cycle ride of Jesus College, Cambridge, time is a rare commodity. Property prices are high, space is at a premium. Our customer, therefore, looked to maximise the space she had in her courtyard garden by decking the entire footprint. Our client required an inspiring space which drains easily, and which would require minimal maintenance. Planting should be minimal and bright, contributing to a Zen-style ultra-modern outdoor living space.

With an eye for colour, style, and quality - the house itself is distinctive, a modern townhouse capped with a Verdigris Copper roof, with large, blue zinc, monolithic, rectangular columns dominating the garden-scape. Colour schemes and planting themes should therefore tie in with this theme of blue/green.

Our Proposal

Upon discussion with the client and her installer, the client chose NeoTimber® Deluxe composite decking. The installer’s recommendation was to create a seamless link between the house and outbuilding. The garden had been allowed to become overgrown resulting in an uninspiring space. Being a courtyard, the garden is thrown into shade for large parts of the day meaning that areas would become mossy, damp and plants struggled to grow.

The client chose our antique colour range, a traditional tone, accented with shades of black for an authentic wood-effect, complemented by charcoal detail around the dining area. This shade tied in well with the blue and green theme and acted as a good natural backdrop for painted planters, a green and white planting palette and carefully chosen accessories such as rattan furniture and outdoor plant design rug. The dining area was further highlighted by the inclusion of a diagonal counter-pattern, using the grooved side to enhance the overall design.

NeoTimber’s composite decking requires minimal maintenance and has a smart design to aid drainage. As a result, the outdoor living space can now be used as an extension of this ultra-modern home in all seasons, with wide patio doors connecting the space. The continuity of the deck throughout the garden footprint, connects the house to the outbuilding and creates a courtyard feel which is cosy, connected and calming.
