Project Background
Shone Building was appointed as the main contractor for the London-based Chamberlain Hotel’s full refurbishment, which included significant upgrades to the penthouse roof terraces. These outdoor spaces needed to contribute meaningfully to the guest experience while also meeting strict building regulations. Meeting fire-safety requirements was a priority, and the terraces’ position above a GRP roof meant that any system requiring fixings could jeopardise the waterproofing layer. The hotel therefore needed a solution that would protect the structure, support effective drainage and deliver long-lasting durability with minimal maintenance.
The design brief also called for a finish that would complement the Chamberlain’s stylish and newly refurbished interiors. Standard commercial decking products were reviewed early in the process but were considered too harsh or industrial for a boutique hotel environment. The hotel required something visually refined, with a natural appearance that felt aligned with the overall design scheme. These combined requirements led the contractor to search for a decking system that could provide both technical assurance and a premium architectural finish, suitable for high-value guest-facing spaces.

Our Proposal
NeoTimber® supplied 85 m² of aluminium wood-effect decking supported by a fire-compliant steel joist and pedestal system. Our aluminium decking holds an A2fl-s1 fire rating, giving the hotel the level of safety required for a commercial rooftop installation. The realistic wood-grain finish, in a walnut tone, provided the warm, design-led appearance the hotel team were looking for, offering a more refined and welcoming look than typical aluminium alternatives. Its low-maintenance surface was also an advantage for the operations team, ensuring the terraces would retain their quality without the ongoing treatment associated with timber.
The steel joist and pedestal arrangement created a stable, even platform across the terrace, allowing the decking boards to be installed cleanly and efficiently. The self-weighted pedestals ensured the system could be adjusted with precision, helping achieve the desired finish without impacting the GRP roof. Combined with a 10-year commercial warranty, the completed installation delivered a dependable, long-lasting, stylish solution that elevates the hotel’s guest experience.
