Composite Deck Lighting Ideas

From candles to mains-powered integral lights, we round up the composite decking lighting options available to you.

Installing composite decking is a significant financial investment and, having done so, you’ll want to make the most of your new outdoor living space. When the sun goes down, a glass of something cool and refreshing, or warm and cosy, goes down well on your composite deck.

#1 - Candles & Lanterns

The simplest way to make a little nook look warm and inviting, romantic even, is to use candles. Whether it’s floating tea lights, a candle in the top of an old wine bottle, or a large free-standing candle, create that perfect magical mood with a naked flame. You can further protect your candle from the breeze by placing it into a hanging lantern or hurricane lantern. Many are designed with decorative patterns that cast enchanting shapes and shadows across your composite deck.

#2 - Solar Powered Lights

If you’re on a tight budget and looking for an environmentally friendly option, solar lighting may be ideal. Solar lights are available as path lights, free-standing posts, and security lights for garages or fence posts. They require no batteries and can cast ample light for navigating your garden. Solar string lights and fairy lights also look attractive wrapped around trees, draped along walls, or suspended across pergolas and arbours. However, while decorative, most solar lights are better suited to creating atmosphere than providing practical illumination. Some bulb-style options can also be prone to water damage if not properly sealed.

#3 - Mains Powered Lights

With the arrival of LED lighting, the options for mains-powered lighting are almost endless. String lights similar to Christmas lights are available, although running cables to a deck area can require considerable preparation. Victorian-style lamp posts can create an attractive focal point in traditional gardens while providing ample illumination. Another popular choice is rock lighting, where realistic fibreglass rock lights blend seamlessly into rockeries while offering practical lighting.

#4 - Integral Recessed Decking Lighting

Whether fitted for safety, feature enhancement, or aesthetics, integral LED composite decking lighting offers a versatile solution.

  • Stairs: Recessed decking lights help guide your way safely in the dark while creating an attractive feature.
  • Rails: Installing lights beneath balustrades or handrails effectively illuminates balconies and potential hazards.
  • Downlighting: Fitted beneath cupboards or worktops, downlights provide practical illumination for outdoor kitchens.
  • Integral Decking Lighting: Designed to be installed beneath the composite deck, these LED lights slot neatly into recessed openings and sit virtually flush with the deck surface.

They put the fun into functional, adding drama and atmosphere to your composite decking area.

#5 - Fire Pits

Fire pits are a wonderful quick win. They instantly create an atmosphere everyone loves, generating both light and warmth. However, they can be messy and may require some effort to maintain an efficient, smoke-free burn.

#6 - NeoTimber® LED Decking Lights

Here at NeoTimber®, we have designed our own range of recessed composite decking lights. Supplied in packs of ten, they connect to a standard three-pin plug and operate from a normal 240V household power supply.

Designed to be discreet yet effective, NeoTimber® deck lights are 30mm in diameter, can be installed up to 1 metre apart, and emit a warm white glow from a 0.6W LED bulb. Installing decking lighting will typically require armoured cable connected to the mains via a Mini Circuit Breaker (MCB), so we recommend using a qualified domestic electrician.
