Exterior Composite Cladding Installation Guide

exterior composite cladding

A simple step-by-step guide to installing NeoTimber® exterior composite cladding.

Installing exterior composite cladding is a simple way to radically transform the external design of your home. Perfect for hiding damaged brickwork, bricked in windows, and damage sustained from rendering, it encourages you to update your property with modern façades that'll stun neighbours, friends, and family alike. Truly, it's a wonderful way to breathe new life into your home.

Though the installation process for composite cladding may feel like a daunting task, it’s not as difficult as it might first seem. Here at NeoTimber® we’ve developed our exterior composite wall cladding to be an easy-to-install option, and we follow the same fixing method as our successful composite decking range. Using clips, trims, and a simple subframe, you can achieve a perfect finish. Let’s take a look at our guide to installing exterior composite cladding.

Measure Up The Area

First up, you need to figure out how much product you're going to need to cover the space. To calculate it, you should measure the height and width of the area you intend to cover. Multiply the two numbers together to get a square metreage area. For instance, if your required height is 3 metres high and 4 metres wide, your square area will be 12m2. Input this figure into our online cladding calculator and choose your desired exterior composite siding product to get an instant estimate of cost and materials required.

Fix Your Subframe

Once you know the cost of your external composite cladding, you can decide what kind of subframe base you want to build. The cheapest method is to attach timber battens to the wall, following the NeoTimber® installation guide for specific spacings and orientation. However, while timber battens may be the cheapest way to fix your cladding boards, they are by no means the most durable. If your budget allows, consider swapping out a timber subframe for our composite joists. It's also advised that a vapour membrane is included behind your joist network. Just to be safe.

Fix The Exterior Composite Cladding

As an established manufacturer and supplier of composite decking, we have already developed a simple, bespoke fixing system of clips and screws to attach your exterior composite cladding to your chosen subframe. Simply mount your first run of cladding boards using the starter clips - slotting the boards in tongue and groove, then screw through the boards into the joist battens to tightly secure them into position. Just don't forget to drill a pilot hole to prevent cracking through expansion.

Apply The Finishing Touches

To make corners and edges look crisp, use one of our edging solutions, our Classic corner trim makes a beautiful addition to any cladding project. These can be affixed using adhesive or our colour-coded trim screws, supplied separately. You will need to take extra care when designing and fitting the surround around a window reveal or when butting up to your eaves. All our composite cladding accessories are available to buy as separate supplementary pieces, so have some fun with it! There are a tonne of bits and bobs to play around with.
